Champion: A title of respect and honor that can have both religious and political connotations, or neither, or both. In the religious sense, a Champion is a hero anointed by The Gods to perform certain heroic duties, such as battling the forces of evil, protecting the innocent, slaying monsters and generally being heroic. The first and greatest Champion was, of course, the Mighty Champion charged with overthrowing the Empire of Fear. He is generally considered to be the first of several distinct, but overlapping lines of Champions.

Champion in the religious sense

The Mighty Champion was the first hero to bear the title Champion of The Gods. The Champion of The Gods is a hero called to serve The Gods collectively and usually assigned a ridiculously difficult and likely to be fatal quest or mission to perform during his or her lifetime, such as "overthrow the Empire of Fear." There is only one Champion of The Gods at any given time. Such Champions are called forth only when needed in times of crisis, so the office is often vacant. The Mighty Champion was succeeded as Champion of The Gods by his son, the Young Champion, and by other descendents in the Line of Champions, but the office is not inherently hereditary and there have been numerous Champions of The Gods during the Age of Hope who were no relation to the Mighty Champion at all.

Individual deities from time to time choose heroes to serve as their personal Champion. Thus, there may be a Champion of Rae, a Champion of Myrm, etc. Such a hero serves that particular god's interests or purposes and typically receives special gifts and blessings from his or her patron deity. Not every god chooses a Champion and not every god who chooses a Champion chooses to have a Champion at all times. Procedures vary.

It is possible for a hero to simultaneously be both the Champion of The Gods and the Champion of a particular god, and perhaps even of several individual gods.
