Jason Cosmo

Page history last edited by Dan McGirt 2 years, 2 months ago

Jason CosmoJason Cosmo: (b. 967 AH) Greatest hero of the Eleven Kingdoms in the closing years of the Age of Hope. Born in the village of Lower Hicksnittle in the Kingdom of Darnk, the most dismal, remote and obscure of the Eleven Kingdoms. Jason lived a fairly unremarkable life as a woodcutter and turnip farmer until the spring of 990 AH, when the bounty hunter Lombardo of Calador arrived in Lower Hicksnittle, claiming that there was a bounty of ten million carats on Jason's head. After defeating Lombardo and his henchman Guido, Jason was expelled from the village by his fellow Hicksnittlers. Numerous adventures followed, which will not be summarized here because, really, you should read the book.

Parents and Early Life

Jason's father was Jolan Cosmo, a simple, honest, hard-working woodcutter in Lower Hicksnittle, where the Cosmo family had lived for at least three generations. Jason's mother, Janna Cosmo, was the runaway daughter of a minor landholder in Brythalia. She taught Jason to read and write, though these were considered useless and potentially dangerous skills in Darnk. Jason grew up reading and rereading his mother's small library of books on history, geography, mathematics and other topics. His knowledge had many gaps, but he was highly educated by Darnkite standards. As a child, Jason did not venture far from Lower Hicksnittle, but he is known to have visited Offal once for the Feast of the Moldy Biscuits. Both of Jason's parents were killed by a plague in 983 A.H.  It is not certain exactly which plague did them in, as there are usually several plagues ravaging Darnk at any given time.

Woodcutter and Turnip Farmer

Orphaned and left to fend for himself, but already near his full-grown size and strength, young Jason took over his father's role as Lower Hicksnittle's woodcutter, while also maintaining a small turnip patch. As he reached maturity, most of the eligible young women in Lower Hicksnittle and nearby settlements perished from plague or other mishap.

Arden's Archvillain

In late 988, wanted posters began to appear across the Eleven Kingdoms offering a reward of ten million carats for the death or capture of "Jason Cosmo." This triggered a massive manhunt across the Eleven Kingdoms, enticing Arden's greatest bounty hunters and hordes of less skilled searchers to seek a man by this name. The bounty notice did not specify his crimes, but the popular imagination -- with a little prompting by agents of the Dark Magic Society -- conjured up tales of many terrible deeds, infamous crimes, and horrible atrocities  attributed to "Jason Cosmo," who was soon known far and wide as Arden's Archvillain. Meantime, the true Jason remained in Lower Hicksnittle, innocent of any wrongdoing and ignorant of this rampant Cosmomania.

Roll of Heroes

In early spring 990, the bounty hunter Lombardo of Calador located Jason in Lower Hicksnittle. Surviving the confrontation and surprised to learn he was a wanted man, Jason sought information in the nearby town of Whiteswab, where he met the wizard Mercury Boltblaster. Accosted by Dylan of Ganth and the Black Bolts, they fled. Later that night, the pair received a visitation from He Who Sits On The Porch, who informed Jason he had been transferred by The Gods from the Roll of Woodcutters to the Roll of Heroes, and would henceforth play a vital role in determining the fate of the world and the nature of the Next Age of Arden.

Sapphrina and Rubis

Soon thereafter, Jason rescued the sisters Sapphrina and Rubis Corundum from captivity in the city of Offal.

Champion of Rae

In the course of his adventures, Jason attracted the notice of Goddess Rae, who insisted on becoming his patron goddess and making Jason the Champion of Rae, her chosen hero. As her Champion, Jason received the Blessing of Rae, which grants hims the strength of ten men, possibly eleven, when the rays of the sun shine upon him. The League of Benevolent Magic gave Jason the Ring of Raxx, an artifact of unknown power reputed to have belonged to the Mighty Champion.

Champion of The Gods

"Now we charge you with a great heroic mission: to be our Champion and safeguard the Next Age of Arden. You will oppose the Society and all other evildoers who would enslave mankind." - Great Whoosh

At the Shrine of Greenleaf, Jason learned he was expected to take on an even greater role as Champion of The Gods, serving as a successor to the Mighty Champion, and charged with upholding good over evil across Arden. After passing the Test of Heroes, Jason was granted possession of the relics of the Mighty Champion, including the sword Overwhelm, the shield Gardswell, and the suit of armor Jason privately (and a bit sheepishly) dubbed the Cosmosuit.

Cosmo's Choice

After his torture at the hands of the Society, a confrontation with Asmodraxas, a brutal duel with Natalia Slash, and facing down the very Jaws of Death, Cosmo was somewhat dead and collapsed into a Paradise coma. His spirit was conveyed to the Gates of Glory where he met Rae, Arkayne and Great Whoosh who informed him they were pleased with his accomplishments. The Gods also told Jason he was not a reincarnation of the Mighty Champion, but was descended from him, and confirmed that they did not know the location of the Superwand. As a reward for his faithful service, The Gods granted Jason the choice of whether to live and continue his service as Champion of The Gods or die and be received into the halls of Paradise and claim eternal bliss. Cosmo chose to return to life.

Meanwhile, in the physical realm, Mercury Boltblaster dragged Cosmo to safety at the Raelnan embassy in Caratha, where healers tended him for the three days his Paradise coma persisted. Upon awakening, he was restored to full health and his aura had reverted to Standard Auric.

Caratha

Following his initial adventures, Jason settled in Caratha in late spring of 990. He began with a visit to the attorney Periglio to claim the Society's ten million carat bounty for himself. This immediately made him one of the richest men in Caratha. By early summer of that year his fortune had grown enough to make him the ninth richest man in the city.

Recognizing their financial acumen and his own lack thereof, Jason placed his fortune in the care of Sapphrina and Rubis, who soon increased his net worth to fifteen million carats.

In the following weeks, he bought a villa and kept company with Sapphrina and Rubis. The twins helped Jason explore the city, touring the Alcazara, the Consolidated Temple of The Gods, Caratha University, the Grand Bazaar, the pleasure barges of the Old Canals, Pantheon Park, and other points of interest.

Various minor adventures ensued through late spring and early summer, including the destruction of four homes and the need to replace all accompanying clothing and furnishings. During this period, Jason paid multiple fines for disturbing the peace and large sums in compensation for the massive property damage that resulted from his various mishaps.

Pantheon Park West Home

In the early summer Jason moved into a large villa on Pantheon Park West. It featured a stately old house with a blue tile roof and ornate marble columns. The house featured multiple bedrooms, parlor, sun room, ballroom, billiard room, conservatory, study, gymnasium, feasting hall, library, and eat-in kitchen. The unnamed staff included a butler, housekeeper, cook, and groundskeeper. The extensive walled grounds included a long tree-lined drive, swimming pool, formal gardens, tennis court, and eight-carriage stable and garage. A few months later the villa was burned to the ground in the riots that racked Caratha that summer. Jason elected to rebuild on the site and erected a large pavilion as temporary quarters.

Fighting Slavery

Jason's outrage at the practice of slavery in Caratha grew until he attended a WGF gladiating bout and realized the fighters were slaves. Jason vowed to free all the slaves of Caratha. This immediately put him into conflict with Lord Damien Slash and Jharl Thusk, CEO of SLAVE*MART, among other powerful forces.

Avenging the Queen

Jason attended the royal wedding of Queen Raella and Mercury Boltblaster in Rae City. When the queen was assassinated by PANGO terrorist Zaran Zimzabar, he joined Mercury's quest for vengeance that took them through Raelna, Orphalia, and into the Bitterspleen HIlls and involved another confrontation with the Dark Magic Society.

Return to Caratha

Following this mission of revenge, Jason returned to Caratha several months later to find Sapphrina and Rubis missing. His search for them took him to Zastria.

Ancestry

Jason shares the given name of the legendary Mighty Champion as recorded in the Book of Uncommon Knowledge. From this coincidence, members of the League High Council concluded that Jason is the Mighty Champion reborn, which Jason denies. The Gods, in a direct revelation to Jason at the Shrine of Greenleaf, confirmed that he was descended from the Mighty Champion, whose line was long thought to have been extinguished in the Bloody Revolution. Without providing much detail, The Gods related that they had watched over Jason's ancestors, protecting them from the Demon Lords by ensuring they were always mired in poverty and obscurity - which inevitably led the Cosmo line to settle in Darnk, poorest and most obscure of the Eleven Kingdoms.

Books Owned

Jason owned a small library of six books inherited from his mother. He took them with him when he left Lower Hicksnittle in 990 AH, but was forced to leave them behind when he fled Whiteswab suddenly. The books were:

  • Bobo the Bashful Bunny
  • Impressionable Young Lad’s Picture Book of Caratha and Its Many Marvels
  • Plutarp's Lives of Long Ago Heroes and Other Notables
