Jaws of Death

Page history last edited by Dan McGirt 10 years, 1 month ago

Jaws of Death: The literal, actual missing jawbones and teeth of the God Death. Death lost his bite several centuries ago and has been in futile pursuit of his Jaws ever since.

Death lost a wager with Vanah, Goddess of Fortune. Death bet his own jaws against the life of Sajahk the Smiling, a mortal wizard favored by Vanah. Betting against Lady Luck is usually a bad idea.

With no particular use for the Jaws, Vanah hid them inside a mountain, surrounded by monsters, traps, puzzles, and magical guardians as tests for those who might brave fortune to obtain the Jaws. After many failures, one such expedition succeeded. The Jaws soon came into the hands of the powerful necromancer Dreadful Dwarkanath. Dwarkanath sought to control the Jaws, but failed. The teeth swallowed him, reduced his fortress, and went on a rampage across six kingdoms, killing thousands. A brave band of priests and wizards finally banished the Jaws. They did not reappear for many years.

At some point prior to 990 AH, Overmaster Erimandras obtained the Jaws by unknown means. In his keeping they appeared as a normal-sized set of perfect human teeth, still attached to the jaw bones. When he invoked the Jaws to attack Jason Cosmo and Mercury Boltblaster, the teeth expanded to monstrous size -- large enough to swallow a person whole.

Controlled by Erimandras, the self-animating Jaws flew under their own power. They could bite through a stone wall by crumbling the stone to dust. The Jaws were unaffected by magic attacks, simply swallowing the effects of any spell. The Jaws swallowed Mercury Boltblaster, who avoided oblivion by clinging to the Lower Left Cuspid of Death. The Jaws swallowed Natalia Slash whole - she did not return. When Erimandras weakened and lost control of the Jaws they turned on him, swallowed him, and vanished. Jason Cosmo managed to hold the Jaws at bay with his bare hands and push them backward. His shield Gardswell withstood the bite of the Jaws. Cosmo also chipped off part of the lower right cuspid with his sword Overwhelm.
