Technically, this name is incorrect because Traditional, and horribly inaccurate, as not all of the Eleven Kingdoms are, in fact, kingdoms. Also, there are other more than eleven sovereign states in the region, both extant and some defunct, which are not considered but none counted as part of the Eleven Kingdoms despite being mingled in their midst. The Grand Duchy of Goldara is one good example. The Lost Kingdom of Terrengia is another. another.
Still, the name sticks. Because the Not-Exactly-Eleven Not-Quite-All-Kingdoms lacks a certain cachet.
During the Age of Despair, the territory that would become the Eleven Kingdoms was under the rule of the Empire of Fear. The Eleven Kingdoms were founded after the downfall of the Empire.

In such districts, the soil can shift at the whim of The Gods, who are especially whimsical after heavy rains. At such times, the ground may collapse into a sudden depression called a sinkhole. Unless the hole happens to emit foul odors and vapors, in which case it is locally known as a stinkhole. On occasion, a vagrant philosopher will take up residence at the bottom of a sinkhole, waving a lantern and muttering about the dearth of honest men. Then it’s called a thinkhole.
